Can I ride an eBike? – UK Law

An eBike is legally classed as an EAPC (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle), and under UK law as of April 6th 2015, anybody in the UK over the age of 14 can ride an eBike so long as it has no more than a 250w motor, and can go no faster than 15.5mph when under power. No licence, road tax, or insurance is required to ride a Benelli eBike, which makes them a viable alternative for people without a current driving licence.

Are there age restrictions for eBikes?

Yes. In the UK, you must be aged 14 years or over to ride an eBike.

Where can I ride an eBike?

All of the Benelli range meet the EAPC requirements which means you can ride them anywhere you can ride a pedal bicycle.

Do I need road tax?

No, eBikes do not require vehicle tax

Do I need insurance?

No, eBikes do not require insurance to be used on the roads. However, we always recommend protecting your investment, so arranging suitable insurance is advised.

Do I need a licence?

No licence is required in the UK for any bike meeting the EAPC criteria.

Do I need a helmet?

You don’t by law, but we strongly advise that you do so for your own safety.

How fast is an eBike?

By law, eBikes are restricted to 15.5 miles per hour when in power-assist mode in public places. You can of course pedal faster than this where conditions permit, but the motor will stop providing power beyond 15.5mph

EAPC requirements in summary

The following rules are valid from April 6th 2015

  • The bike must have pedals that can be used to propel it
  • The electric motor shouldn’t be able to propel the bike when it’s travelling more than 15.5mph
  • The rider must be 14 years or older
  • The motor shouldn’t have a maximum power output of more than 250 watts
  • The bike must have a plate showing the manufacturer, the nominal voltage of the battery, and the motor’s power output
